DARDENNE PRAIRIE, MO. — Megan Meier thought she had made a new friend in cyberspace when a cute teenage boy named Josh contacted her on MySpace and began exchanging messages with her.
Megan, a 13-year-old who suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder, corresponded with Josh for more than a month before he abruptly ended their friendship, telling her he had heard she was cruel.
The next day Megan committed suicide. Her family learned later that Josh never actually existed; he was created by members of a neighborhood family that included a former friend of Megan's.
Now Megan's parents hope the people who made the fraudulent profile on the social networking Web site will be prosecuted, and they are seeking legal changes to safeguard children on the Internet.
The girl's mother, Tina Meier, said she doesn't think anyone involved intended for her daughter to kill herself.
"But when adults are involved and continue to screw with a 13-year-old, with or without mental problems, it is absolutely vile," she told the Suburban Journals of Greater St. Louis, which first reported on the case.
Users on MySpace must be at least 14, though Megan was not when she opened her account. A MySpace spokeswoman did not return calls seeking comment.
Tina Meier said law enforcement officials told her the case did not fit into any law. But sheriff's officials have not closed the case and pledged to consider new evidence if it emerges.
Megan Meier hanged herself in her bedroom on Oct. 16, 2006, and died the next day.
Megan had been on medication, but had been upbeat before her death, her mother said, after striking up a relationship on MySpace with Josh Evans about six weeks before her death.
Josh told her he had recently moved to the nearby community of O'Fallon. He said he was home-schooled, and didn't yet have a phone number in the area to give her.
Megan's parents said she received a message from him on Oct. 15 of last year, essentially saying he didn't want to be her friend anymore, that he had heard she wasn't nice to her friends.
Someone using Josh's account was sending cruel messages. Then, Megan called her mother, saying electronic bulletins were being posted about her, saying things like, "Megan Meier is a slut. Megan Meier is fat."
Her father said he found a message the next day from Josh, which he said law enforcement authorities have not been able to retrieve. It told the girl she was a bad person and the world would be better without her, he has said.
Another parent, who learned of the MySpace account from her own daughter who had access to the Josh profile, told Megan's parents about the hoax in a counselor's office about six weeks after Megan died. That's when they learned Josh was imaginary, they said.
The woman who created the fake profile has not been charged with a crime.

I hear God forgives those who repent. Maybe some of your neighbors will, too. But stay as you are, and I think those words from your "Josh Evans" sockpuppet may stay with you longer than you had thought possible.
I don't know what the future holds, but I hope you can find some way to atone for the pain you brought to the lives of so many.
What these assholes did was juvenile and unforgiveable,and I can't believe they are not goung to be prosecuted I'm glad her identity is public now.
These names and address are showing up in a few places. Caution is advised before anything is done. Whoever it is that pulled this sick joke needs to be slaughtered like the pigs they are. Interviews with others at various news sources are revealing that the people who did this are showing no remorse at all for the results. They knew what they were doing, and they WANTED this result. This was not malicious teasing, it was no different than standing on the edge of a building and pushing the potential jumper off the edge.
If a person is not suicidal, and someone else abuses them psychologically to the point that suggesting suicide results in that persons death, it is murder.
I am so disturbed by Lori Drews Response the the reporter. She is one cold,cold person. I hope Karma comes back around to these rotten apples. My heart breaks for poor Megan, if only someone had spoken up before this got to be so ugly. What kind of person would do this kind of thing and be bale to sleep at night? Lori Drew seems to the an empty jealous shell. The authorities can find a way to press charges on her and i hope the community pushed this to happen. I think everyone should write to the prosecuter and request they further investigiate. Megan deserves some justice, in the very least maybe a new law can be made that does make this a crime. Drew knew this child had emotional problems and she fed upon them and used it to gain way into this lonely girls heart and then purposely and viciously destroyed Megan. What did she think would be the result when she told her the world was a better place without her in it. Lori Drew if you ever read this I think you are lower than low and a very coldhearted person!!

"In reference to their daughter's suicide, Drew explaind she wanted to "just tell them" what she did to contribute to the Meier's daughter's suicide. She instigated and monitored a "my space" account(<---blurred) which was created for the sole purpose of communicating with Meier's daughter. Drew said she, with the help of temporary empoyee named "Ashley", constructed a profile of "good looking" male on "my space" in order to "find out what Megan (Meier's daughter) was saying on-line" about her daughter. Drew explained the communication between the fake male profile was [?aimed? illeg] at gaining Megan's confidence and finding out what Megan felt about her daughter and other people. Drew stated she, her daughter, and Ashley all typed, read, and monitored the communication between the fake male profile and Megan. Drew went on to say, the communication became "sexual for a thirteen year old." Drew stated she continued the fake male profile despite this development.
According to Drew "somehow" other "my space" users were able to access the fake male profile and Megan found out she had been duped. Drew stated she knew "arguments" had broken out between Megan and others on "my space". Drew felt this incident contributed to Megan's suicide, but she did not feel "as guilty" because at the funeral because she found out "Megan had tried to commit suicide before."
Drew explained the neighborhood had recently found out her involvement in Megan's suicide and her neighbord have become hostile to toward her and her family. Despite the recency of the suicide and several neighbors recommending she not confront the Meier family (especially on Thanksgiving), Meier stated she and her husband attempted to contact the Meier family three times, "banging on the door" although Mr Meier had already told them to leave."

Wow, is she not a piece of work. Her remarks are remarkably self serving. Obviously they are displayed here not for the truth of the matter asserted, but what she had to say about it. And this is her side. This is as good as it gets.
Ladies and gentlemen...By the admission of Lori herself,she conducted an online relationship-as an adult with a 13 yr old. By her own admission,she states that the tone of this correspondence was sexual. She did not stop this correspondence. Ladies and gentlemen,that is a crime. The only conclusion that I can reasonably deduce as to why the authorities in the community have not issued charges against Lori, is that the perp has friends in high places among law enforcement and/or the business community. If that is the case,then I can reasonably conclude that these people condone such behavior.
The bitch must die. Fuck her, she caused the death of this poor girl. She should have known that her neighbors daughter had depression issues... she did gain her confidence, and even if she didn't; she can never be absolved of her part in Megans death. Die a horrible death you horrible bitch.

At the very least, this woman should be prosecuted for sexually abusing a child, sued for everything she owns, and have her own children removed from her custody. Of course, if she is convicted of sexually abusing a child, her children would be removed from her custody as she'd then be imprisoned as a sex offender.

What amazes me - is the total lack of any remorse by these very evil people (Lori and Curt Drew).
One article mentions that an employee of her company was in on this. Who is the employee? Is he/she not culpable?
We do not believe in an violent retribution - but we do have the right to write letters to these evil people, and their clients and the local government officials. Would you do business with Lori or Curt Drew? Even as things stand, we see them as immature and exhibiting poor decision making and judgement. This alone is enough to say no to their businesses (her ad business, his real estate).
